I had a single skein of Ella Rae Lace Merino. This is a lovely soft 4ply yarn. I decided to design a shawl for it. My plan was to keep it geometric so that the spine down the middle looked like it belonged there. I had to restart about 4 times until I had design I liked.
The final design I came up with was to have straight lines of YOs going out from the centre of the shawl and a line of YO around the bottom to tie in with the spine that comes with the basic centre top work down design. This is my favourite shawl construction because you can stop when you run out of yarn so you don’t have to think about yardage too carefully before you start.
The shawl ended up being 70cm deep and 140cm wide with blocking. A good size to wear wrapped around the neck for winter and looser for the cooler days in Spring and Autumn. Monkey says its a shawl, I say it is a scarf. Its that size inbetween; a large scarf or a small shawl.
I’m looking at my notes at the moment to see if I have sufficient to write up the pattern. Let me know if you would like to make one, it will give me a bit more incentive to get the pattern written!
A few weeks ago I pulled a skein of Mayhem and Chaos Polwarth/silk/cashmere out of my stash and started thinking about what to do with it. I wasn’t 100% sure about the colour (it came from a yarn club years ago). I got onto pinterest and started looking at photos containing that colour so I could determine what I liked and what I didn’t. My conclusion was it was a background colour and needed something bright in the foreground to set it off.
With this in mind I decided that whatever I made had to be plain so that it could be worn with brightly coloured scarves or jewellery.
I’m most of the way through making a top with it. I’m using the Mohair Minimalist pattern but I’ve added bust and hip shaping so that it doesn’t pull anywhere. This one has a lower neckline than my mohair one and my tension is 16st/10cm instead of the 14 I used last time making it a little bit less see through. It is fitting really well and working out just as I wanted it to be.
Here are a few shots with scarves so you can see what I had in mind…
I started this scarf for the Ravellenic games, 1 skein, scarf &rainbow. One week gone and there is no way it will be finished in another week.
It is kidsilk haze stripe on 6mm needles. The slow bit is that I decided to use Moss Stitch, I love the effect, but I hate knitting k1 p1. I have 50g, the skein still has 42g on it! A long slow project!
